Guitar Lesson: Five Ways To Learn The Notes On The Guitar

To find your way around the fretboard of the guitar is very important. It will help you in guitar improvisation, sight reading, and in understanding chords and more. In this guitar lesson we will explore five ways to learn the notes on the guitar fretboard.

How much do you need to practice?

A couple of minutes a day with one of these exercises will help you improve your skills in finding the notes. In this guitar lesson we will focus on the fretboard and not the actual guitar sheet music.

Learning to read guitar sheet music will be much easier when you master the notes on the guitar keyboard. I have divided this article in five lessons that you can alternate between until you master the guitar fretboard.

Guitar lesson 1

Learn the basic notes, the notes of a C major scale (the white keys on the piano) on every string. Let's test this on the first string on your guitar. The first note is an E. You will find F on the first fret. G on fret three. A on fret five. B on fret seven. C on fret eight, D on fret ten and the next E on fret twelve.

The sixth string on the guitar is an E too. It's just two octaves lower but you will find the same note names on this string on the same frets two octaves lower.

On the second string you will find the notes on the following frets:

fret 0-B, 1-C, 3-D, 5-E, 6-F, 8-G, 10-A, 12-B

On the third guitar string you'll find the following notes:

0-G, 2-A, 4-B, 5-C, 7-D, 9-E,10-F, 12-G

I guess you can figure out the names of the notes on the next strings by yourself but here they are in case you will double check. The fourth string:

0-D, 2-E, 3-F, 5-G, 7-A, 9-B, 10-C, 12-D

The notes on the fifth string or the A-string:

0-A, 2-B, 3-C, 5-D, 7-E, 8-F, 10-G, 12-A

I would suggest that you concentrate on one string at a time and learn the names as you play the notes on your guitar maybe by saying the note names aloud as you play.

Guitar lesson 2

Learn a specific note on all strings. This is a great way to learn the notes and quite amusing too. Let's use the note G. You'll find it on the third fret on string six. Where can you find the note G on string five? Right, on fret 10.

The G notes on the strings from the sixth string to the first are on the following frets:

3 10 5 0 8 3

You can make an exercise of this by playing the G notes from string six down to the first string and back again. Try this with other notes too. For example E.

If you devote a couple of minutes a day on this exercise you will soon be able to play the sequence of strings fast, spotting the notes without effort.

Guitar lesson 3

Learn the names of the notes on a fret. We can start with the open strings starting from the sixth string to the first. The names will be:

E A D G B E

Now, play the notes on the third fret in the same order. At the same time try to say the names of the notes aloud. I will help you this time only by writing the note names down:

G C F Bb D G

Try this exercise on different frets and say the names of the notes aloud.

Guitar lesson 4

Learn the notes in a chord. Play any chord and name the notes aloud from string six to string one. This guitar exercise will also help you to understand how the chords are built.

Guitar lesson 5

In this guitar lesson you will use your ability to create random notes on the guitar. As you play notes on your guitar at random you also say the note names aloud.

Play in an even pace, just fast enough to make this exercise a challenge for your mind so your mind will concentrate on the task and not wander off.

All of these small guitar lessons can be used together with a companion. One playing the notes on the guitar and the other saying the note names.

As I mentioned before I think it's best not to overdo these exercises. Choose one of the guitar lessons and work a couple of minutes a day on mastering the exercise.

Learning to play an instrument is not easy and requires a lot of time and discipline. You want to optimize your practice conditions to learn as fast and easy as possible. A decent standard guitar with a good sound is the first thing you need. Anything less will make learning more difficult, slow down your progress and will make you believe you just don't have the talent or the discipline or the patience to learn it.

My first guitar was a borrowed guitar from the music school. At the time I could not hear when a guitar was out of tune but even my totally untrained beginners ears could hear that it was an awful guitar. It sounded dark, flat and ugly and I was embarrassed to bring that to my teacher. Needless to say how frustrated it was to learn to play on it. Despite the guitar I practised every day, my parents saw that I was serious and three months later I had my own guitar, a brand new nylon string classical Yamaha guitar.

Choose your instrument with care.

So how do you go out and buy a good standard guitar without having to spent a ton of money not knowing where the threshold is between a good guitar and one of poor quality? Don't just go out with a couple hundred dollars choosing a guitar within that budget.

The price of a guitar goes from a hundred dollars to thousands of dollars. Obviously the more expensive the better the guitar but for six to seven hundred dollars you can buy a decent one that goes a long way. It's is not cheap but far from expensive and it's worth saving until you have the money because over time a good guitar will become a better guitar while a bad guitar will never be a good one.

What makes a great instrument - Things to look out for.

If you have untrained ears ask someone with experience to go with you. You want to make sure that the guitar doesn't have invisible damage or issues.

Check the tuning : Tune the guitar or ask someone to tune it for you. If a guitar has tuning issues it will definitely go out of tune within fifteen minutes of playing on it.
Check that all pickups work : Plug in the guitar and try every pickup setting using the switch. You should hear a clear difference in tone. There is a tone knob. Make sure it's all the way open(turn clockwise)while you check the pickups. Turning it counter clockwise will filter out the high frequencies.
Check the neck : If you can't play yet you don't know what feels comfortable and what doesn't but you should be able to easily slide up and down the neck. Doing so let your fingers and thump hang over the edges onto the fret board to check that frets don't have any sharp edges sticking out. It shouldn't hurt.

The neck should also fit properly onto the body. When you hold the guitar the way you would play it look at the neck where it is attached to the body. The body has a cutout and the neck should fit exactly into the space. On some guitars the cutout is wider than the neck. You should not be able to fit your bank card into the space between the neck and the body.

Check the pretuning : Guitars are pretuned in the factory. What does that mean? The pitch of the harmonic on fret twelve should be identical to the open string. If that is not the case the guitar cannot be tuned properly.
Check the frets : Turn the guitar horizontal holding the lower end of the body near you face so you can look down the fretboard. All the frets should be parallel. This is most often the case but double check.
Try several guitars : If you have set your mind for instance to buy a Fender Stratocaster tryout a few guitars. Every single guitar sounds different. You might prefer a black guitar but find that you really like the sound of the blue one.

Just remember that what you pay less on buying the instrument you'll pay later in sweat, more practice time and costs to repair and adjust your cheap guitar. For acoustic guitars I can recommend Martin and Taylor and for electric guitars I recommend American made Fender and Gibson.

Finding Middle "C" And How to Play a C Chord When You Play the Guitar

When you are learning to play the guitar, you will undoubtedly see a lot of references to something called "Middle C". This sounds very daunting to a fresh new musical mind, but it is really very simple. We will see how to find this on a piano or keyboard, where it is in musical notation, then how it is played on the guitar.

On a standard piano, there are 52 white keys punctuated by black keys that are grouped in two's (7 sets) and three's (7 sets) intermittently. At the end of the keyboard is one extra black key for a total of 36 black keys and a total of 88 keys overall.

Now find the name of the piano manufacturer. This is the exact center of the keyboard. Follow the center down and find the set of two black keys nearest this point. The white key to the left of the two black keys is middle C.

In musical notation, middle C is a little more of a challenge, but not much, really. Music is written normally on what is called a Grand Staff, which has the bass line under the treble line. Middle C is located in the precise center of the two lines. This is why it is called middle C. It is found in the "middle" of the keyboard and in the middle of the Grand Staff.

To play the guitar - a middle C would require that you place the ring finger of the left hand behind the 3rd fret of the 5th string. You will notice that this is not the center of the fret board. This is because the guitar is a treble instrument. Bass guitars are a separate instrument altogether and they only have 4 strings.

Because of this location of middle C on the guitar, you have a larger range of notes in the higher registers than a piano. You can also play any chord at any position on the guitar; the only thing that changes is the fingering. This will come easier later on. For now, let's just be happy we know where middle C is at.

To play a C Major chord, do the following:
1. Tune the guitar to standard tuning of E, A, D, G, B, E.
2. Sixth (thickest) string: not played at all.
3. Fifth string: Place ring finger behind the 3rd fret. This tone is a C
4. Fourth string: Place the middle finger behind the 2nd fret. This tone is an E.
5. Third string: Played open (no frets). This tone is a G.
6. Second string: Place the index finger behind the 1st fret. This tone is a C.
7. First string: Played open (no frets). This tone is an E.
8. Arch your hand a bit so all the strings can be heard at one time and drag the pick across the strings.

Are you ready to play the guitar? Do this right and you have made music! This is the easiest way there is to make a C Major chord, so practice it until you can do it every time without muting a string. When you have this down, you can start learning other chords. But take my advice and get this one down first.

Classical guitar is a fascinating instrument to learn. The process of graduating from struggling to get your right hand fingers working to playing bass, melody and accompaniment together will keep you enjoying your guitar practice for a long time. Not that it takes that long before you are playing easy classical songs.

One of the things that the beginner classical guitar player notices is the noise his fingers make when his hand moves up and down the neck of the guitar. This book contains pieces from all periods of musical history written in standard musical notation and in tab form.

There are also collections of pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach like Sarabande No. 1 and Musette in D Major that are surprisingly easy for beginners to play. Also there are well known anonymous pieces like Packington's Pound, Nonesuch, Kemp's Jig.

The best thing about learning easy classical guitar songs is that many are beginner-friendly pieces that will yield great satisfaction without being difficult to play.

The basic idea of how chords and scales go together is this: If a chord is only made up of a couple notes (such as a power chord) then you will want to play a pentatonic scale over it because this scale only has five notes in it. If a chord is made up of three or more notes (such as a major or minor chord), full major and minor scales will work better because they are made up of seven notes and have more notes in common with the chord. One of the great things about soloing and using scales in rock music is that once you have found your

key signature and corresponding scale, you don't need to worry about changing it if you don't want to. The one scale will work great for the whole song. When playing over more complex styles of music, such as jazz, one guitar scale won't work for the entire song. You need to change scales as the chords change.

The most popular type of chord in Rock music is by far the Power Chord. If your looking for basic guitar chords then look no further. Power Chords are the simplest chords for guitar because they only contain two notes, the root and the fifth. When your playing guitar scales over a chord you want the two to have as many notes in common as possible. Since a power chord only has two notes in it, a pentatonic scale (the king of all rock guitar scales) is always a great choice to use. This is because it is made up of only five notes instead of seven like the major and minor scale has. The one thing that you need to make sure of is that you are starting the scale on the same root note as the key signature (i.e. if your song is in A Minor, then you need to start the minor pentatonic scale on an A).

Should I use a Major or Minor Pentatonic Scale?

The safest bet here is to always stick with the Minor Pentatonic Scale. Most rock songs and chord progressions are in minor key signatures so the minor pentatonic scale will always work great. You can always use the major pentatonic scale too, you just have to make sure to play it in the relative major key (we will talk more about this concept in future articles).

When should I use full Major and Minor scales?

I am a big fan of Major and Minor scales because they give you the opportunity to really shred and they give you the ability to create very fluid lines. Using them in rock music is a little

trickier than using minor pentatonic scales though. The best time to use these scales is when your song uses major and minor chords instead of power chords. The cool thing about these types of chord progressions is that you can still use a Minor Pentatonic Scale if you want to keep it simple or you can integrate both scales and create some really cool and unique licks.

Let me start out by saying that this article is about playing guitar faster, not learning guitar faster. The ability to play fast occasionally comes naturally but most guitar players have to seriously work at out. And unfortunately the exercises you need to do to play fast are always boring. You can't learn to play guitar fast by simply picking up your guitar and trying to play fast. You just end up playing a lot of nonsense and people will look at you funny. I've seen it happen

The key to playing guitar fast is to learn how to properly execute two things: picking between strings and alternating picking. Alternating picking simply means that you pick down on one note and then pick up to play the next. If you do not do this you will never play fast.

The third piece of the puzzle is to learn to pick with as little effort and movement as possible. By picking with little effort and little movement the guitar pick ends up much closer to the next string after the picking movement and you can play that note that much faster. This is where I see most guitar players making a mistake. They believe that to play guitar faster you have to play it harder. This could not be further from the truth.

If you truly want to learn to play guitar fast you have to know how to play guitar slow and deliberate first. No unnecessary motion, light touch on the guitar pick, and you must hit each string with the same amount of force every time. When you've truly mastered playing fast it becomes almost effortless to pull off.

Here are a few exercises to get you started.

The first exercise is too practice picking between strings. You will play one string by picking down or up and then play the next guitar string the opposite way. So your pick is always striking: down, up, down, up etc. The exercise is such play each of these string combinations one after the other. The numbers represent each string. For the purposes of this exercise I usually number the low E string as number 1 and the high E as number 6, but the reality is you can just as easily do it the opposite way. You will get the same result. Practice playing the following combinations keeping an even tempo. Only speed up when you can do each combination at the same speed as any other combination:

1-2,1-3,1-4,1-5,1-6,2-3,2-4,2-5,2-6,3-4,3-5,3-6,4-5,4-6,5-6

Here is another picking exercise. Play the following string combination striking each string 4 times: up, down, up, down:

6, 5, 4, 3, 5, 4, 3, 2, 4, 3, 2, 1

Now on to the left hand. There are 2 secrets to learning to play fast with your left hand: using your pinky and only lifting your fingers as far off the fretboard as you have to. A lot of guitar players never learn to use their pinkies. They will never be able to play as fast as those who do. No matter what you are playing, even if you are just fingering chords get into the habit of using your pinky as much as possible.

OK, here is simple left hand exercise to increase you guitar playing speed ability. Before you mess around with stuff like bends, and tremolo you need to get the basics down. The basics are simply learning to switch between all fingering combinations. In the following exercise I've numbered your left hand fingers as follows: 1-index,2=middle,3=ring,4=pinky.

Practice the following combinations one after another. Start on your high E string at the 12th fret, playing only on that string. Do every combination using alternating picking then move to your B string and repeat. Then move to your G string, etc.When you finish on your low E string, move back over to your high E string but this time start on the 11th fret. Continue in this manner until you end up on your low E string on the 1st fret.

Here are the combinations:

1-2-3-4, 1-2-4-3, 1-3-2-4,1-3-, 1-4-2-3, 1-4-3-2, 2-1-3-4, 2-1-4-3, 2-3-4-1, 2-4-1-3, 2-4-3-1, 3-1-2-4, 3-1-4-2, 3-2-1-4, 3-2-4-1, 3-4-1-2, 3-4-2-1, 4-1-2-3, 4-1-3-2, 4-2-1-3, 4-2-3-1, 4-3-1-2, 4-3-2-1

Practice all of these exercises. If you have access to a metronome I strongly recommend that you practice with one, noting each time the highest speed at which you correctly executed the exercise. Gradually build up your speed. I guarantee that if you follow these exercises for two weeks straight just as I have said, you will end up being able to play faster than you ever imagined. By doing exercises like this there is no limit to the speed at which you will be able to play.

Playing scales is a part of all music education and learning how to play scales on guitar can turn you from an amateur guitar player to a guitarist who can improvise on any tune. The trouble with scales is that learning to play them takes daily practice. You go up and down the scale countless times, each time the scale seems to be a little longer and more tedious than the last.

Of course, learning how to play scales on guitar need not always be a chore but after some weeks of daily practice you reach a certain level of skill at playing scales and you find that you just don't know how to progress further.

Playing scales not only gives a guitar player the potential path to improvisation skills, this kind of practice is very important for turning your fingers into a guitar player's fingers and giving your brain a knowledge of the guitar fretboard. Once you start on learning to play scales on the guitar you begin to realize that any note can have a different sound and feeling in many different positions on the guitar neck.

These differences in the way the notes sound all over the guitar give you the key to experimenting with scale patterns and turning them into riffs and solos. If you make up a riff or an attractive combination of notes you can try it out up and down the fretboard. Your own enjoyment in moving simple scale patterns around the guitar will be your inspiration to learn more about how the various scales sound and how you can use them for improvisation.

Your education in how to play scales on guitar can be divided into two sections: learning the scales from a web page or a guitar tutor and listening to, and learning to play, the solos of your favorite guitar players. It should only be a little while before the two sections combine. You will see how other guitarists are playing scales and how time and again they make use of the same sequences of notes in a combination of positions on the fretboard to produce a seemingly endless repertoire of guitar solos.

You begin your exploration of scales and the guitar by learning three notes per string scale patterns or five notes per string patterns. There is a slight difference in the way these patterns are played because the three note patterns need you to move your hand position a little more than the five note per string patterns.

More and more people are turning to the internet to fulfill their desire to learn how to play a guitar. There are an array of products available on the net for teaching how to play a guitar. Some are not too bad, some good and then there is a few really excellent ones.

These programs can have you on your way to playing a guitar, whether you have absolutely no experience or have some and want to continue on your quest to master the guitar.

Learning how to play a guitar does definitely involve some work from your side. The work is necessary, but if there is no fun involved, well then much of the work is wasted

Before starting out it is essential that you work out a regime, putting aside a certain amount of practice time daily. This does not mean that this time must consist of continuous playing without any break. This is also a time when you renew your views of your guitar and yourself. Have at least one aim when you sit down to practice and try to reach it.

Part of learning to play a guitar is examining your attitude towards practice time. If you know that you are a person who struggles to get work done, it would help a whole lot if you set out a specific time and stick to it.

If you are not getting some of the things right that you have been working on, maybe it is time to take one step back. You will only make practice more fun and not feel grumpy or overwhelmed. Believe me, you will get there and when you do, you had laid a much more solid foundation than most guitar players who move on to quickly and being to play a guitar but not properly.

How to Care for A Classical Guitar

Classical guitars are reasonably durable and easy to care for but they are musical instruments that are carefully assembled from exotic woods; and there are some basic rules of care you should follow to insure your guitar gives you many decades of outstanding sound and performance. Here are some simple guidelines.

Instruments are predominantly from wood of varying types, and wood, being a living breathing thing, can be very strongly affected by changes in both temperature and humidity. This is because different types of wood will expand and contract at different rates with temperature or humidity changes. This expansion and contraction can adversely affect the performance of your instrument or even make it unplayable.

To avoid any problems from temperature or humidity you should always store your classical guitar in your home in a moderate temperature. Never store it in the attic, basement, or some other place that is not climate controlled. This is usually not a concern if you are playing the guitar on a regular basis but if you plan on putting it away for long periods of time find a place in your home to store it.

When transporting your guitar be aware of changes in temperature and humidity. Keep it with you inside the car, don't transport it in the trunk, particularly if the weather outside is unusually cold or unusually warm. And when it has arrived at a new destination open the case and allow it to adjust to the new environment for at least an hour before tuning and playing it. I also recommend that you don't use a soft-shelled case when transporting it. You should keep it in a hard-shelled case. This will help prevent damage.

One of the biggest concerns you should have is the risk of accidental breakage of the neck or tuning head of your guitar. One fall, even from ground level can break it literally in half and to avoid this you should always be aware of how you keep your instrument around the house. I recommend you never lean it against a wall. You should always keep it in some kind of a stand when not being used. And if you have a lot of foot traffic, or small children in your home, you should probably put it on a wall mount stand which will keep it up and out of the way. If you are going to store it on a floor stand be sure to keep it in a corner of a room, and away from doorways and foot traffic. One fall off a stand can break the neck of the guitar and render it useless.

Oils and dirt from your hands and fingers can have an adverse affect on the strings and wood of the guitar and I recommend you change the strings every three months as a minimum and every month if you play it on a daily basis. And when you have removed the old strings you should take a little time to inspect the instrument, fretboard, and tuning pegs for any signs of problems. And before re-stringing it be sure to wipe it down gently with a soft, lint free cloth. And never use any type of furniture polish on your guitar. Only use cleaning solutions specifically designed guitars. You can get them at any instrument shop for only a few dollars.

Caring for a classical guitar is not a hard thing to do but there are a few common sense guidelines to remember and if you follow these guidelines you can expect your instrument to continue giving you its best sound for a many years to come.

Have you ever wished you could play a melody on your guitar? Now you will learn how to play Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star without sheet music! Let me take you to the first note of the song with the help of guitar tab notation!

Here you have the first note written with number guitar tablature:

The first number tells you which fret to play, in this case you will not press down any fret which is indicated with the number 0. This is called to play an open string. The second number indicates which string to play. In this melody you will start with the third string.

The strings are numbered starting with the bottom string on your guitar. You will use three strings to play the melody. The first string or the bottom string is called E, the second string B and the third string G. We will give the G-string a number instead and as you already have seen call it 3.

Now it is time to start playing the melody. Here is the first line of lyrics with the corresponding melody written with number guitar tabs:

I suggest that you use your right hand index to play the notes on the first fret, the middle finger for notes on the second fret and your middle finger for the third fret notes!

You might feel that it is a bit difficult to use your left hand fingers this way but if you are patient you will find that you are able to keep your hand in the same position as you play which will help you when you play more advanced melodies!

Another advantage is that your fingers will have their fixed frets to work with which will help you find your way better on the fretboard and you will be able to play without looking at your fingers all the time!

As I mentioned, I call this type of notation number tablature and it is a convenient way to display melodies in text form but a more common way to show guitar tabs is by using a staff with six lines representing the strings and numbers on the lines indicating the frets. You will find this notation on many guitar sites!

I suggest that you memorize the melody line by line instead of looking at the numbers. This way you will have access to the melody whenever a guitar is available!

Many people who want to learn how to play the guitar try to rush themselves, jumping into guitar tablature before they have a firm grip on the basics of the guitar. The key to becoming a good guitarist in the long run, is to become a master of the basic, fundamental elements of the instrument before trying to move on to more complex and harder guitar techniques. Before you can learn to play the guitar you should first learn how the instrument works and how to properly take care of it.

The guitar is composed of a long wooden neck attached to a large hollow body over which a set of six strings, of various thickness, are stretched. These strings vary in thickness and, when plucked, each resounds with a different music note. By pressing down upon a string at various points along the neck (these points are called guitar frets) you can change the pitch of the resulting sound. It is common for people to underestimate the value of learning about the guitar and how to care for it before they begin to actually learn to play the guitar. However, learning to tune your guitar and understanding how to properly replace strings and store your instrument can affect how well it plays and how long it lasts.

After you have gained a proper understanding of these principles you can feel even more confident in moving on toward learning to play the guitar. You should begin by familiarizing yourself with the open strings and then progress toward using frets to create different chord and notes. Many inexperienced guitarists find it uncomfortable at first to press down on the guitar strings and it requires a great deal of practice to build familiarity with the proper position your fingers must be in to strike each note. Each line of guitar tab corresponds directly to a string on your guitar. The top line corresponds to the bottom for first string on your guitar (the high e), while the bottom line of tab corresponds to the top or 6th string on your guitar (low E).

Reading Tab

Guitar tabs are simply a mix of numbers and symbols placed on different lines. Here's a simple example of a guitar tab for the E major chord.

A---2----
E---0----

The number correspond to the fret you press down on that particular string. So for the above example tab you would be playing the 2nd fret of the A string, the 2nd fret of the D string, the first fret of the G string and you'd strum the low E, B and high e strings open (hence the 0 on those lines).

You would know this is a chord because the numbers are all on top of each other in a line. If you say something like this:

You would be picking individual strings. In this case it would be the 3rd fret of the low E, followed by the 5th fret of the A string and finally the 7th fret on the B string.

While there are other symbols you can run into this is the basics of how to read guitar tab.

Fastest way to Learn a Song from Tab

This might seem straight forward but I have met many beginner guitar players who don't think of this basic technique.

When learning a new song it's important to break the song down into parts.

For example if the guitar tab has the verse, chorus and bridge parts all separated out then first practice the verse chords or what ever it may be. Learning a song in parts, first slowly, then adding speed next and finally piecing all the parts together makes it far more manageable then trying to just play through the entire song first time.

It is worth mentioning that although those last two songs featured rich complex arrangements on the final recordings, they are both based on very simple musical ideas, which translate very well to a basic acoustic guitar. That is the beauty of the The Beatles music, even when you strip away the color and decoration of orchestras and layers of interesting instruments, the songs are still truly great at their core.

So if you are new to the guitar or have been playing for some time and you are looking for a way to challenge yourself and improve, then I highly recommend picking up a copy of any The Beatles album, perhaps a greatest hits album, and picking up your guitar.

Most people handle the guitar like it's a baseball bat. They grab it and squeeze the hell out of it. There is nothing more simple to understand and so difficult to learn. Learning how to relax your hands and remove tension is critical. The more tension in your fingers the more difficult it will be to make changes on the guitar. Tension binds your fingers and makes it harder to perform the small movements needed to play guitar.

Beginners are often intimidated about pressing the strings hard enough to prevent string buzzing. A little string buzz is better than the tension. With time your fingers will develop calluses and strength, and the string buzzing will go away. For now focus on being relaxed and flexible in your fingers. I start every playing session by just simply making a fist and the extending my fingers several times. This had the affect of teaching my fingers the relaxed state when my fingers are half extended. This is the feeling I look for when playing guitar.

Slow Down to Speed Up

The best method to increasing the speed you play your guitar is to SLOW DOWN. This is so true. Most beginning guitarist want to play as fast as they can, but to do this and make it sound good, you have play some notes people want to hear. Not just a jumble of stuff.

To trick to speed is being able to play the notes or chords correctly and by instinct. The best way to develop instinct is to start slow and play the notes properly without building tension in your hands and with a consistent beat. You should purchase a metronome, or I prefer a drum machine.

Set the beat at a reasonable speed and play at that speed until you've mastered what you are trying to learn. Sometimes it needs to be annoying slow, but it pays off with a big dividend in a relatively short period of time. Once you are comfortable playing at the selected speed, kick the speed up about 15% and then repeat the process. Before long you'll be flying up a sliding pentatonic scale flawlessly and at unbelievable speeds.

Slow down and relax and your playing will improve faster than you think. If you want to play the guitar the rest of your life, then give yourself the time to learn.

Three Ways to Tune Your Guitar Without an Electronic Tuner

If you play guitar, you know how important it is to have a good sense of pitch so you can keep your instrument in tune. Few things are worse than strumming a chord and finding there are two strings so flat they sound like they've been hit by a steamroller.

Learning to keep your guitar in tune can help you develop that sense of pitch, as you come to recognize what exactly a well-tuned guitar sounds like. Let's face it, anyone can turn their tuning peg until the tuner light turns green instead of red, but when you can tell your strings are properly pitched without mechanical aid you're starting to get somewhere.

Here are three different ways to tune a guitar without an electronic tuner.

1. Matching pitches with another instrument (simplest)

The best method of tuning for a beginner is simply to get the pitches from someone playing another instrument.

If you're playing with woodwind or brass players, make sure to request your notes in concert pitch. For example, someone playing a B-flat trumpet will need to play her D to produce a concert C. That means to match all six strings of a guitar in standard tuning you'll need her to play F#, B, E, A, C#, and another F#.

As the other player gives you the notes, simply tune each string until the pitches match.

2. Fretting the notes for the next string (intermediate)

This is the most common method for tuning. Simply play the note on a lower string that matches the pitch of the next higher one. For example, to tune the A string, you would fret an A on the low E string (the 5th fret). Then you turn the tuning peg for the A string until the pitch matches exactly.

Of course, you have to remember that how hard you press the strings will affect the pitch. So if you push down on the E string until your knuckles turn white, you will likely make your A string sharp. Always be relaxed and touch the strings as lightly as you can while still getting a clear tone. You'll need to make sure your low E string is in tune before you begin.

Every string will be tuned to the pitch of the next lower string when played on the 5th fret except the B string. To tune the B string, play the G string while holding it down at the 4th fret. Once you're finished tuning all the strings, play a couple of chords to make sure the whole instrument is in tune.

3. Tuning with harmonics (advanced)

This method requires that you understand how to play natural harmonics. If you lightly touch a string on the 12th, 7th, or 5th fret, then pluck it, you'll hear a natural harmonic if you don't dampen the string too much. On the 12th fret you'll hear a tone an octave above the open string. The 7th will be an octave plus a fifth, and the 7th two octaves.

The low E string played with a natural harmonic two octaves above the open string pitch (or fundamental) will produce the same pitch as the A string played with a natural harmonic an octave and a fifth above the fundamental - an E, equal to the pitch of the open high E string.

You can continue up the strings, tuning the A, D, and G strings this way. As usual, B is the odd string out. To tune the B string, play the low E string with a harmonic on the 7th fret and pluck the B string open. Adjust the B string to match the pitch of the harmonic. Then you can tune the high E to the B in harmonics.

Learning to tune your guitar is a great way to become familiar with and learning to match pitches, which will help greatly when it comes to playing with other musicians or making your own adjustments on the fly. Each of the three methods has its own advantages, and each will help you hone your skills in a different way.

Pentatonic Scales and Guitar Solos - Which One Do I Use?

The major and minor pentatonic scales are two of the most widely used scales for guitar soloing in rock, blues, and country music. I've had many guitar students tell me at their guitar lessons that they know the two scales and solo primarily with them, but are unsure of how to figure out which minor and pentatonic scale to use to solo over a particular song or chord progression. I thought I'd write a short article to explain the most common uses.

The Minor Pentatonic Scale

Since it's a very common scale for guitarists to know, and often the first one we learn, I'll start with the minor pentatonic scale. To find the scale that will work to solo over a chord progression is very simple. First, you need to know what key the chord progression is in. If you are unsure of how to figure out the key of a song, it'd be very helpful to learn some basic music theory so that you're able to identify the keys of chord progressions. Once you do know the key, you simply go back 3 frets from the note that's the key of the chord progression and start the minor pentatonic scale there. For example, if you are soloing over something that's in the key of C, you would start the scale on the note A. The note C can be found on the 8th fret on the 6th string. If you go back 3 frets, you will be on the 5th fret, which is the note A.

Sounding Bluesy

One other common way to use this scale is to use it to create a bluesy sound in your solo. To try that, you simply start the minor pentatonic scale on the note that is the key of the song. So, if the song is in C, you would play the scale starting on C. Again, this usage of the scale will sound very bluesy, while the other one I mentioned will be much more major key sounding. They are both completely acceptable, and you can go back and forth between them in the same solo if you'd like. Try experimenting with both scale usages to get used to the different sounds.

Major Pentatonic Scale

To solo with the major pentatonic scale over a chord progression, you just start the scale on the note that is the key of the song. So, if the song you are soloing over is in the key of C, you would play a C major pentatonic scale. Above, I said that to solo with the minor pentatonic scale, you go back 3 frets from the note that is the key of the song. Interestingly, these two scales, the major pentatonic starting on the note that's the key of the song and the minor pentatonic starting three frets back, contain exactly the same five notes! A minor pentatonic, then, and C major pentatonic are the exact same scale, just starting on different notes.

Breaking Free of Positions

One thing to work on if you're already comfortable using both the major and minor pentatonic scales, is to combine the two scales that will work in a key. In the key of C that I mentioned above, we already said that you can solo in C major pentatonic and A minor pentatonic. Since the two scales are exactly the same, you can use both of them, which will give you more area of the guitar to solo with and can help you break out of just being stuck in one position. Try connecting the two scales and being able to use both areas!

Guitar Chord Progressions - Where Do They Come From?

Guitar chord progressions are like baby brothers - you cannot escape from them and they take some explaining. Let us do some analysis on the term "guitar chord progressions". In case you did not know, any time two or more notes are played, this is referred to as a "chord". You probably know that certain guitar chords sound good together. These are called guitar chord "families". Guitar chord "progressions" are certain sequences of chords that sound so good together that they are used as the musical basis of songs.

Chord progressions are derived from musical scales like C D E F G A B C. This is the C major scale which is used very often in music. It is just a sequence of notes with no sharps or flats which makes it easy to use to teach music students the principles of music. When we study chord progressions we think of these letters as chords instead of single notes. If we number the chords from one to seven we can work in a practical way with the chords in any key because the basic principles are the same.

If we write out the chords as numbers we have the problem of getting the numbers denoting the chords confused with numbers that are used in the names of the chords. If we are working with the chord B7 we do not want to have to stop and think what "77" means so we use Roman numerals to number the chords. That way B7 is named VII7. To a newbie that might still be confusing but it is a good way of fixing the problem.

So, now the chords are named I II III IV V VI VII. To save us from getting too bogged down in musical theory, let us take some simple ideas for granted. First, in any key the chord that the key is named after is always the I chord. So now you can go back and look at the notes in the C major scale and check out the new names of all the notes. Not that it will mean much yet.

Another thing we are going to take for granted is that I IV and V are the three most important chords in the scale. When you learn a song or instrumental piece, the chances are that you will be starting the song with the I chord and when you end the song, the chord you finish on is also the I chord. There are exceptions but there is no need to go looking for them. So we can take that fact for granted.

That is all the basic theory we need to learn guitar chord progressions without blundering around like an elephant in an outhouse. There is more you could learn but we are more concerned with playing the chords than explaining them. Now we can take a look at the some chord progressions. The most common progression you will come across as a guitar player is I IV V. You will find these chords referred to in music theory as "tonic" "subdominant" and "dominant".

You have probably heard that pop musicians only know three chords. This may or may not be true but they do mostly work with one chord progression consisting of three chords. The main variations come when for effect the composer or interpreter of a song might use the V7 or IV7 chords.

This chord progression is the basis of almost all pop, blues and rock songs. Many songwriters have made departures from this basic progression and jazz musicians have long ago abandoned sticking to this, or any basic form.

How To Change Your Guitar Strings

Changing your guitar strings might make you feel a litte uncomfortable if you have never done it before, but it's really quite simple and should become a regular part of your guitar care routine. Before you do anything, first take time to make some personal observations such as:

1. Which way do you have to turn the tuning keys to tighten or loosen the strings?

2. How are the strings aligned from the nut to the bridge?

3. Which is the heaviest string?

Taking mental notes will probably save you some frustration and make the job much easier.

Below you will find some helpful steps to follow for changing your strings. Once you've changed your guitar strings a couple of times your confidence should begin to grow and you won't need to refer to these steps any longer. I like to remove all of the guitar strings in order to give my guitar a thorough cleaning, but you can remove and replace them one at a time if you prefer.

Guitar Care and Maintenance Tools:

- Needle-nose Plyers (to cut string ends)

- String Winder

- Soft Cotton Cloth

- Guitar Cleaning Polish (do not use furniture polish, oils, or wax)

REMOVING THE STRINGS

Acoustic Steel String Guitar-

1. Using the string winder , begin slowly loosening the string(s) until completely slack.

2. With the needle-nose plyers, carefully grab the string from the capstan (the part it winds around) and pull through the hole until it is free.

3. Taking the string winder again, use the cut-out at the end of it to grab the pin at the bridge. Gently pull the pin until it comes out of the hole.

4. Continue this process until all the strings are removed.

5. Clean guitar surface thoroughly.

Classic Nylon String Guitar-

Follow steps one and two above. When you come to step three, take your needle-nose plyers and carefully loosen the figure eight knot at the bridge. Pull the string free.

Electric Guitar-

Follow the same procedure as described for an acoustic steel string guitar. However, if you have an electric guitar with a movable bridge you may want to take it to your local music store and have them show you how to do it safely. If the bridge is moved from it's correct position you will not be able to tune your guitar after restringing it.

RE-STRINGING YOUR GUITAR

Acoustic Steel String Guitar-

1. Bend the ball end of the string slightly and place it inside the hole below the bridge. Some steel string guitars do not have pins. When this is the case, just pull the string throught the hole.

2. Line up the string with any grooves in the pin. Insert the pin into the hole, making sure it is secure.

3. Take the other end and insert into the hole on the capstan.

4. Pull the string through leaving a fair amount of slack between the capstan and the bridge.

5. Bend the string at the point it comes through the capstan to keep it secure.

6. Watching out for your eyes, begin turning the key with your left hand. Once you get it started it may be easier to use the string winder. (For safety reasons, you might want to cut off any excess string. I usually wait until after they're all on to do this).

7. As you are winding, apply some tension to the string with your right hand to help keep it taught. Make sure you are winding in the right direction! On the bass strings you will be winding counter-clockwise (away from you). On the treble strings you will go the opposite direction.

8. Continue to wind each string until all the slack is taken up. Do not worry about tuning yet.

9. Cut off all excess string length.

Classic Nylon String Guitar-

1. Put the string through the top of the hole found just below the bridge.

2. Pull about 3 inches through.

3. Bringing the string up over the tie block, pass it underneath itself at the original point of entry.

4. Come down over the tie block again and wrap the end of the string around itself in a figure eight type pattern.

5. Insert the other end of the string down through the hole on the capstan.

6. Wrap the string around the back and then underneath itself in order to secure it in place.

7. As described above, begin turning the key with your left hand while maintaining some tension with the other until all the slack is taken up. With a classical guitar you will wind clockwise on the bass strings and the treble strings.

8. Keep the string as straight as possible as it continues from the capstan through the nut and down onto the neck.

9. You should not have any excess string length, but if you do, cut it off.

Electric Guitar-

Follow the same procedure as described for the acoustic steel string guitar.

Aside from the guitars mentioned above there are plenty of others, though a beginner would probably want to opt for the classical guitar.

Most first timers wanting to learn how to play the guitar choose to buy an electric guitar over the acoustic version, probably because of the wider choice of sound effects options and they are slightly easier to play. Though you'll probably hear many teachers telling you that taking acoustic guitar lessons first is the best way to build a strong technique for when you want to move on to the electric guitar in the future.

Acoustic guitars tend to be bulkier and have both thicker necks and strings that are raised high above the fret board; this makes it more difficult to push down on the strings or form and hold a chord to produce a clear sound. The idea is that if you're able to master playing an electric guitar, which has a narrower neck and both thinner and lower strings.

Another pint in favor of the acoustic guitar is that it can be used to create both rhythm sections, using chords and to build some cool lead parts. On the other hand electric guitars don't sound very good when used for strumming rhythms; they tend to be played during a long complex lead solo part.

The guitar is an instrument that comes in many types. Each major category requires a different style of guitar playing. The broad categories are nylon string classical, the steel string acoustic guitar and the electric guitar. Each uses the same standard tuning and all the different types of music can be played on any one of them but each is designed to play a particular style of music. Lets look at the different types and the style of music each is designed to play.

The first is the nylon string classical guitar. It is the closest to the original type of guitar used throughout history. The type of music it is designed to play is of course classical guitar music. It is also used by some folk and country players. It has a full body and nylon strings. There are twelve frets to the body and eighteen frets overall. The neck is wider then the other types of guitars. It has a round sound hole and the bridge is glued to the body of the guitar. A variation is the flamenco guitar. It looks similar but has some differences. A classical guitar is designed to have more sustain while a flamenco guitar is designed to respond quickly with less sustain. The flamenco neck is slightly wider and the strings are closer to the neck and body. The modern flamenco guitar because of the way a flamenco player uses the fingernails in strumming, usually has protective plastic glued to the body around the sound hole.

The steel string acoustic guitar has a full body, the bridge glued to the body and a round sound hole just like a classical guitar. The neck is a lot narrower and there are fourteen frets to the body and twenty frets overall. It's main use is for country and folk music. It has very strong use as a rhythm guitar even in rock music. It often has a cutaway in the body of the guitar to allow access to the higher frets beyond the body. It is often made into an acoustic electric with transducers under the bridge. By the way they make some nylon string classical guitars today with cutaways and transducers under the bridge for amplification. A variation of the steel string acoustic is the twelve string guitar. The higher strings are doubled and the lower strings have an octave higher string added. This type is mainly used for rhythm. There is one more type of acoustic guitar. It is the arch top acoustic guitar with two violin type f holes instead of the one round sound hole. This style is very seldom used as an straight acoustic today. It is however the basic design of the hollow body electric, described below.

Finally we have the type that most people think of when we say guitar, the amplified electric guitar. The signal that is amplified is taken from the magnetic pickups. The magnetic pickups get their signal right off the steel strings. Since we don't need a hollow body to magnify the sound, we can have a totally solid body guitar. But in addition to the solid body there are many varieties, including hollow and semi hollow bodies. Electric guitars usually have twenty two frets and two or three magnetic pickups. The solid body can have a double cutaway like the Fender Guitar or a single cutaway like the Gibson Les Paul guitar. The hollow and semi hollow bodies have a body more like a violin. They would usually only have a single cutaway. Semi hollow usually means the body is only half the thickness or less. The top is arched and instead of a round sound hole, you have two f holes like a violin. The strings at the bottom are attached to a tail piece just like a violin. The bridge may not be attached to the guitar but just held in place by the strings so you have to be very careful to make sure it's at the right position. The solid body is the choice of rock musicians. Jazz musicians prefer the full body electric. The sound that you get out of these guitars is very dependent on the amplification and in the case of the solid body effects. The full hollow body electric is good at producing the mellow sound of jazz. The solid body guitar is great at producing the sustained and distorted sound of rock.

For example, three songs based on only two guitar chords are "Paperback Writer" by The Beatles (chords G and C), "Whole Lotta Love" by Led Zeppelin (D and E) and "Something In The Way" by Nirvana (E minor and C).

Bar chords are the first advanced step for the guitar player. You have some kind of understanding of how to play open guitar chords and you have practiced till your fingertips are hardened enough not to hurt any more. So the next step is to learn the basic open chord shapes that move up the guitar neck to make bar chords and to start on the next stage of educating your left hand and arm in the art of guitar playing.

When you learn bar chords you will see that there are some basic chords that you have already learnt how to play that can be moved up the fretboard to form chords in more keys. The way we move open chords up the fretboard is by placing the first finger on the left hand across the guitar's neck and using the other fingers to complete the chord shape.

When you first try to play bar chords you will notice the change in sound. You have made all the guitar strings shorter, so they do not have the same amount of sustain and reverberation. The next thing you notice is that bar chords are painful. The pain should lessen as you practice but if it doesn't there are some things about your guitar playing you will need to look at.

First, if there is any adjustment needed to the way you press down on the strings with your left hand, you will need to relax your hand and experiment a little. Hold the chord shape but do not exert the pressure needed to make a clean sound. Now see if there is any tension in your arm. Just check to see if you can feel it. Go all the way up and down the arm fro the shoulder to the fingertips and relax any little areas of tension. This might result in some change in how you are holding your hand on the strings. As you try this checking for tension, also take note of if you hold your breath and clench your jaw. If you do either of those things, let the tension drop away in those areas.

Other areas that might need attention when you are looking for the easiest way to play bar chords are the height of your guitar's action and the need for hand exercises. You can do an online search for balls or other gizmos that you can use to help build finger strength, or for hand and finger strengthening exercises. But before you get too far into exercises, if your guitar's action is high you will need to press hard to make bar chords. Acoustic guitars have a relatively high action so the strings do not buzz. If you feel that your action might be too high you can adjust it by filing down the slots in your bridge so that the strings sit lower. If you make the strings too low you will need to buy another bridge bone.

If you are able to switch between acoustic and electric guitars you can clear up the question about your guitar's action because electric guitars have a lower action than acoustics. There are also tricks that you can use to avoid the pain of guitar chords, like using the open D fingering to move up the frets instead of using the open E shape to make a bar chord. This limits your chords to the top three strings. Also you can try loosening the tension on your strings or fooling around with open tunings, but do not go meddling with your guitar unless you are really sure you have some medical condition that stops you from playing bar chords. For now just assume that your hand will stop hurting once you have practiced enough.

The Gibson SG '61 Reissue Features a '60s Slim-Taper Neck Profile

No guitar neck profiles are more distinguishable than the neck profiles employed on the Gibson models of today. The '60s neck profile--found on the SG '61 Reissue--is the more modern, slim-tapered neck most commonly associated with the Les Paul and SG models of the early 1960s. The neck is machined in Gibson's rough mill using wood shapers to make the initial cuts. But once the fingerboard gets glued on, the rest--including the final sanding--is done by hand. That means there are no two necks with the exact same dimensions. So while it still has the basic characteristics of its respective profile, each neck will be slightly different, with a distinct but traditional feel.

Trapezoid Inlays

TWO '57 Classic Pickups

For the first few years of their production--1955 to 1961--Gibson's PAF humbuckers were wound using imprecise machines, resulting in pickups with slightly different output and tone, desirable to players who wanted to mix and match and explore a complete spectrum of tonal possibilities. Introduced in 1992, the '57 Classic provides warm, full tone with a balanced response, packing that classic Gibson PAF humbucker crunch. The '57 Classic Plus is the perfect bridge-position companion to the '57 Classic, inspired by those original PAFs that received a few extra turns of wire. Both are made by Gibson to the exact same specs as the original PAFs, including Alnico II magnets, nickel-plated pole pieces, nickel slugs, maple spacers, and vintage-style, two-conductor braided wiring. Solid Mahogany Body
Probably the most central of all SG features is its solid mahogany body. The SG's slim mahogany body indulges players with a weight-reduced guitar alternative, with absolutely no compromises in tone, sustain, or performance. The mahogany goes through the same rigorous selection process as all of Gibson's woods, and is personally inspected and qualified by Gibson's team of skilled wood experts before it enters the factories. Inside the Gibson factories, humidity is maintained at 45 percent, and the temperature at 70 degrees. This ensures all woods are dried to a level of "equilibrium," where the moisture content does not change during the manufacturing process. This guarantees tight-fitting joints and no expansion, and controls the shrinkage and warping of the woods, in addition to reducing the weight. It also improves the woods' machinability and finishing properties. Consistent moisture content means that the SG will respond evenly to temperature and humidity changes long after it leaves the factory.

Set-Neck Construction
Like all classic Gibson guitars, the necks on SGs are distinguished by one of the more traditional features that have always set them apart--a glued neck joint. Gluing the neck to the body of the guitar ensures a "wood-to-wood" contact, no air space in the neck cavity, and maximum contact between the neck and body, allowing the neck and body to function as a single unit. The result? Better tone, better sustain, and no loose or misaligned necks.

A properly designed daily practice to really start the game. It can help improve your technique and theory of knowledge / skills application. It can be fun and not let you die of boredom.

First you need to estimate how long it will be able to devote your guitarplay every day. Be realistic, but also willing to make sacrifices - you really should practice every day! I would say it should be at least an hour, if you want to make some decent progress (if you're a guitar god one day will be a lot more, though). Well, depending on your goals, divide them into segments -. Consider what is most important to you as a guitarist Be specific - your technique is right or left hand (or both)? It is theoreticallyimprovisation or composition?

Depending on your preferences an hour long practice session might look like this:

1. Warm-up, 5 minutes. Perform warm-up exercises of your choice.

2. Left hand technique, 10 minutes. Work on your legato skills exclusively.

3. Right hand technique, 10 minutes. Perform right hand exercises.

4. Left & right hand synchronisation, 10 minutes

5. Theory, 10 minutes. Learn and practice scales or chords.

6. Jam! 15 minutes. Improvise over a backing track or a tune you like, try to incorporate the techniques and theory you've just learnt.

You could (and should!) get even deeper than that. For example you could split the left hand technique segment into two five minute bits and practice trills in the first one and legato runs in the second one.

If your current approach to guitar practice is not a very organised one this might seem like a pretty tight practice regime. Give it a try, stick with it and soon you'll be amazed by the results!
